Blood is thicker than water. This phrase brings a myriad of thoughts and emotions into the minds of those who hear it. A few individuals may see this expression as nothing more than a simple observation. For most, this phrase would induce strong feelings of love, owing to its idiomatic meaning, that one’s strongest ties are to one’s immediate familial relations. In Macbeth, blood and water are two heavily used image patterns in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, appearing time and time again to haunt Macbeth and his wife until their dismal conclusion. For Macbeth, the phrase ‘Blood is thicker than water’, would put fear into his heart, as well as a powerful desire for the clean, refreshing water to wash the haunting, staining blood away. Blood is one of the most famously used image patterns in the literary world and is the most heavily employed notion in Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
